Proper bootstrapping

چکیده
According to amuch discussed argument, reliabilism is defective formaking knowledge too easy to come by. In a recent paper, Weisberg aims to show that this argument relies on a type of reasoning that is rejectable on independent grounds. We argue that the blanket rejection that Weisberg recommends of this type of reasoning is both unwarranted and unwelcome. Drawing on an older discussion in the philosophy of science, we show that placing some relatively modest restrictions on the said type of reasoning suffices to block the anti-reliabilist argument.

Uncertain semantics , representation nuisances , and necessary invariance properties of bootstrapping agents Andrea
In the problem of bootstrapping, an agent must learn to use an unknown body, in an unknown world, starting from zero information about the world, its sensors, and its actuators. So far, this fascinating problem has not been given a proper formalization. In this paper, we provide a possible rigorous definition of one of the key aspects of bootstrapping, namely the fact that an agent must be able...
متن کاملBootstrapping , uncertain semantics , and invariance
In the problem of bootstrapping, an agent learns to use an unknown body, in an unknown world, starting from zero information about the models involved. This is a fascinating problem, which so far has not been given a proper formalization. In this paper, we give a rigorous definition of what it means for an agent to be able to use “uninterpreted” observations and commands: there are some disturb...
متن کاملSemi-Supervised Learning for Semantic Relation Classification using Stratified Sampling Strategy
This paper presents a new approach to selecting the initial seed set using stratified sampling strategy in bootstrapping-based semi-supervised learning for semantic relation classification. First, the training data is partitioned into several strata according to relation types/subtypes, then relation instances are randomly sampled from each stratum to form the initial seed set. We also investig...
متن کاملUnsupervised Learning of Generalized Names
We present an algorithm, Nomen, for learning generalized names in text. Examples of these are names of diseases and infectious agents, such as bacteria and viruses. These names exhibit certain properties that make their identi cation more complex than that of regular proper names. Nomen uses a novel form of bootstrapping to grow sets of textual instances and of their contextual patterns. The al...
متن کاملAsymptotic Inference of Autocovariances of Stationary Processes
Abstract: The paper presents a systematic theory for asymptotic inference of autocovariances of stationary processes. We consider nonparametric tests for serial correlations based on the maximum (or L∞) and the quadratic (or L2) deviations. For these two cases, with proper centering and rescaling, the asymptotic distributions of the deviations are Gumbel and Gaussian, respectively. To establish...
متن کاملTheory of Carrier Phase Ambiguity Resolution
Carrier phase ambiguity resolution is the key to high precision Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) positioning and navigation. It applies to a great variety of current and future models of GPS, modernized GPS and Galileo. A proper handling of carrier phase ambiguity resolution requires a proper understanding of the underlying theory of integer inference. In this contribution a brief revi...
